The campus of St. Martin’s-in-the-Field is situated on an 8 acre parcel of land donated in 1954 by Mrs. C.T. Marston. The original church, now Heck Hall, was completed in 1955 and St. Martin’s-in-the Field was officially approved as an independent parish at Convention in 1956, with The Reverend Lewis O. Heck as its vicar. In the late 1960’s, as St. Martin’s was blossoming as a faith community, there was strong movement in the Episcopal Church to invest in Christian formation and education at many levels.
Headquartered nearby in Washington, D.C. and spearheaded by John Denham, the Mid-Atlantic Training Center (MATC) was established with a mission to train and empower clergy and laity in developing Christian education and formation programs, as well as providing a wealth of human resources training and interpersonal/ congregational development training. Under the leadership of The Revs. Frederick VanderPoel and Ben Sommerville, St. Martin’s saw a dozen or more parishioners participating in programs offered at MATC, many of whom then shared their expertise and knowledge at the diocesan level as well as here at St. Martin’s.
Our parishioners have a rich history of participation. We were recognized as Parish of the Year in 2002 by the Diocese of Maryland, a fitting testament to the spirit and commitment at work at St. Martin’s. In November 2005, we passionately celebrated our jubilee anniversary and we press on into our next century with the great expectation and hope of knowing and serving God more fully.
